The first important step is to meet and to spend
some time building a detailed understanding of the problems someone
is experiencing. This may take one, hour long meeting, or it may
take several meetings, depending on the extent of a person’s
difficulties and how they are feeling about them. Once we both feel
that a good and thorough understanding of the type, range and severity
of the problems has been achieved, the next goal is usually to try
to understand why the problem has occurred and why it has not gone
away with time. Once we understand the problems in detail and some
of the underlying causes, then we can begin to make an informed
and effective plan together for helping to change things for the
better.
